Even though this blog is still primarily Sherlock oriented (and still my personal blog too), I’ve decided that I reblog and post about Star Trek 2013 and Supernatural enough, that I now have links for that content on my blog’s main page for convenience. :D
There is also links listed for Alistair Duncan, Misha Collins, Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki and a giant link about Save Undershaw!
Enjoy~

Because I’ve been reading so many different books on Doyle’s supposed plagiarism of the Baskerville idea, I felt the need to crack-defend him. (Though I do not believe for a single minute that Doyle actually stole the idea but that Robinson and Doyle worked the idea out like Alistair Duncan describes in An Entirely New Country.)
Alistair Duncan: Undershaw - my view
This is what Alistair Duncan, well known Sherlockian writer and a member of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London says about Undershaw in his blog:
Undershaw was Arthur Conan Doyle’s home between October 1897 and September 1907. Within its walls he resurrected Sherlock Holmes, entertained many of the great literary figures of the day and sat with his wife as she died of tuberculosis. After it was eventually sold it became a hotel and the hotel operated quite successfully until it ceased trading in 2004.
Undershaw in its day
At this point the property was purchased by a developer who sought planning permission to convert it into a number of separate dwellings. Since he first learned of this, Mr John Gibson – author/co-author of a number of Sherlockian and Doylean books - has been fighting against it. Some years later the Undershaw Preservation Trust was formed as the public face of the campaign.
The ideal outcome for many people both inside the UPT and out is that the house becomes a museum dedicated to Conan Doyle and his works. However the UPT has recently expressed its belief that the most likely route to the house’s successful preservation is that it be bought and restored as a private dwelling. They do not oppose the idea of a museum (and would rejoice if one was set up) they just think it less viable in the current economic climate. This willingness to look at all options (even if some people find them unpalatable) is something I fully understand and endorse because it tallies with my own attitude.
In my opinion, the number one priority is saving the house. What it is saved to become is a secondary concern. <…>The UPT, despite its opinions on the future of the house, is only fighting the planning consent. That is the beginning and end of its purpose. Again, this is why I support them and, in the short-term, this is the only fight that matters. If it is lost any and all visions for the house’s future are irrelevant.
Alistair is an honorary Baker Street Babe and he is awesome. Go read his book An Entirely New Country about Doyle’s time at Undershaw.
Yes, forgot to add that I share the honor of being honorary Baker Street Babe with him! :-)
Enjoying An Entirely New Country at present. <3
Guess what came in the mail? I’m so excited! I’m such a slow reader, but between cleaning and my friend Dean visiting, I will start reading this today.
Alistair Duncan’s An Entirely New Country (With foreword by Mark Gatiss). Purchase your own for a great cause!
Please help save Undershaw! Like them on facebook, sign the petition, or buy this book by Alistair Duncan. Save a wonderful piece of history…Undershaw, one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s residence, where he wrote many Sherlock Holmes stories, including The Hound of the Baskervilles.
Oh my goodness! Alistair found my tumblr! *extremely embarrassed for various reasons* But this is so neat too!
What is really hysterical about this is that he found my post on here! It’s not like I advertise my tumblr on twitter (I’ve only had a twitter account for about a month? I have only about 6 followers on twitter because I’m still figuring it out and I haven’t advertised my twitter name on here…I guess you all know now!)
When his book (An Entirely New Country - Arthur Conan Doyle, Undershaw and the Resurrection of Sherlock Holmes) is finally delivered to my house and I finish reading it, I know I’ll have to tweet him about it. I look forward to it! :D
It’s funny, because we just talk about daily everyday things when he tweets questions to his followers. But when I tweet back, he always replies. He seems like a sweet guy! XD
lol, Ihe’s lovely. We’ve been chatting mostly about food. Thinking of an original version to write a sherlocky cook book :)
Oh my gosh, that would be the best cook book ever. X-D I’d contribute a recipe! lol
That’s so cool! :D I know who that is, but my inner geek keeps snickering because my brain immediately registers Alistair and Duncan, both Grey Wardens, from Dragon Age. Don’t tell him that though >.>
You gamer geek! LOL of course you would. X-D
Don’t worry. I usually don’t converse with him unless he asks his followers questions. heheeh~
When his book (An Entirely New Country - Arthur Conan Doyle, Undershaw and the Resurrection of Sherlock Holmes) is finally delivered to my house and I finish reading it, I know I’ll have to tweet him about it. I look forward to it! :D

This charming book stands not only as a testament to a crucial and hugely productive period in the life of one of our greatest storytellers but as a proud call to arms for his house’s preservation.
- Mark GatissUndershaw, one of the homes of Sherlock Holmes creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The house was built for Doyle at his order, and it is the location where he wrote many of his works, including The Hound of the Baskervilles. Alistair Duncan just tweeted about how profits from the sale of his book will go towards saving Undershaw! And a foreword by Mark Gatiss is an extra bonus!
Help preserve an incredible piece of history!
I will buy this book VERY soon!
And I did! ;-)
I’m looking forward to reading it so much. And I support Undershaw with the purchase! What could be better than that?
I love that you made a post just as I considered making one.
I literally finished the book an hour ago, It’s fantastic and offers so much insight into the way Doyle’s experiences and friends influenced his work. I can wholeheartedly recommend this book; and yes, as you said, Undershaw is being supported through the sales of the book.
It also has loads of pictures, both of Doyle, his family and his aquaintances/friends, so if you like old photographs, you’ll love this book. It’s also rather funny and Alistair’s commentary is subtle but very amusing and at times moving.
Oh, and Alistair is also an honorary Baker Street Babe, so that in itself should be a reason to go and get his book :)
Oh, and Mark Gatiss’ introduction is very nice as well :)
Oh my goodness! *squees!* I love reading historical stuff (for example, Christmas Eve 2010 I read an entire book on the history of my mom’s hometown in one sitting…it’s so cool to find that stuff out).
Good good! I’m so glad to hear it is a wonderful book.
And Alistair is an honorary Baker Street Babe? YES! *laughs* I tweeted him a few days ago and he was so cool and polite when he tweeted back…so that makes that even more awesome to know! <3
I’m looking forward to reading it so much. And I support Undershaw with the purchase! What could be better than that?
