Wikipedia has a list of American words not commonly used in the UK.
WHO NEEDS BRITPICKERS FOR YOUR FIC? NOT YOU!
This is a funny list because loads of these words are words that I would never use in a fic. Take the first one: 401K. Just no reason to ever write about my characters’ retirement plans. Arroyo? Yeah, maybe if I’m writing a story set in the Wild West (i.e., not in Great Britain or the Land Down Under). Bear claw: I have never heard of this food item before. Conniption fit: Not what I’d have my characters throw.
Still, the list is amusing, if anything, and gives me some insight into American English. Hey, I never knew that “boondocks” came from Tagalog!
Even if I ever get the opportunity to live in the UK, I will always use the word ‘bodega’. #NewYorkerAtHeart
I have heard of bear claws, actually. Yay, pastries.
In other thoughts, this is very helpful. But, I’m fairly sure having a Britpick would still be a very good idea anyway for the cultural differences as well as the words. Just a thought. :D
