Two Years: How The Sherlock Fandom Saved My Life

bakerstreetbabes:

Two years ago today we put out our first episode. It was a giggly affair, and frankly, I had no idea what I was doing. I know what I wanted to do, but it was just a dream that it’d ever amount to something. It has, and I am forever thankful. I’m most thankful to the Sherlock fandom actually. It gave me not only the idea for the podcast, but it gave me friends. It gave me my passion. It saved my life.

This isn’t something easy to write about, but it’s something important. A large amount of people see fandom and internet groups as being silly and frivolous, full of nerdy teenagers and introverted adults who hide away from the real world. They see fandom as a bizarre and ridiculous culture full of obsessive girls, fawning over some random celebrity or writing homosexual fan fiction about characters from the show they watch on repeat. Do these parts exist? Yes. Is that what fandom is? No.

Fandom is family. It’s a community. It’s where fans of media congregate and talk about what they love. It’s where they create in honour of the things they love, and it’s where friendships are born… many which last a lifetime. Many which do more than I will be able to describe. I’m going to try though, because today is the second anniversary of the podcast I created, and in these past two years fandom has brought me so much that I owe more than just dozen friends to it. I owe it my life.

I’ve never really written about my depression before in such a public space, and I don’t think it’s brave what I’m doing. I’m going to share my story because it’ll explain the importance of fandom culture to those of you who do not understand it and it’ll reiterate it to those in fandom just how beautiful it is. It’ll also, I hope, explain why I’m so passionate about what I do here at The Baker Street Babes. Some days it’s all I’ve got.

Since the Babes JUST tweeted this and haven’t got to their blog yet, I’d thought I’d jump ahead and spread the news asap! Spread the word and thank you!

Thank you!  And thank you to all the fans who adore this show, for getting the word out there that it’s extremely uncomfortable for an actor to feel distracted from doing his or her best work.  Show love, step back, be mindful that these are people trying to bring you something amazing.

No problem! Do what we can to help out, right? ;-)
And you couldn’t be more right!
Oh and since I forgot to at first, source of your tweet.

The Elite Devotee or How The Sherlock Fandom Is A Horrible Embarrassment To The Sherlockian World by Phillip Shreffler

bakerstreetbabes:

This is the article that the rant was written in retaliation to. At the time I hadn’t read it, because it was sent only to a select few Sherlockians, but heard through the grapevine of the contents. I’ve since been sent the article and warned of its actual words. I knew it was aimed at fandom in a very derogatory way, but I had no idea it was a personal attack. My name is mentioned. I’m quoted. I’m apparently a horrible embarrassment and a tragedy. You know what, that doesn’t matter. Were my feelings hurt? Sure. Was I enraged for being called out by a petty cowardly man? A bit. But that doesn’t matter, I’ll take your bitter words Mr. Shreffler and continue to make The Baker Street Babes amazing. Maybe you’ve seen us on your television, as we’ve been on NBC, The Today Show, CBS, and appeared in USA Today and online at FOX. Or maybe you’ll see us in your local bookstore when our essay collection is published. Or maybe you’ll see us at the BSI Dinner which, guess what, we were invited by your BSI boss Michael Whelan, to for our contributions to the Sherlockian world. Hmmm.

As for us just being silly Sherlock fangirls. I hope you know that you contradicted yourself. You said we only drooled over Sherlock and then quoted me saying I wanted to start something for SHERLOCK HOLMES fans. Notice I didn’t actually mention the BBC. Also, if you bother to look at our episode backlog, you’ll notice we only have three out of thirty-six episodes are directly linked to the BBC show. Sure, we mentioned it in others because, guess what, it’s a Sherlock Holmes adaptation. I know. It’s hard to accept. I’m sure you’ll get over it, after you get over yourself.

And so, for those who dare risk the ignorant babble of a man who cannot let go of the past and thinks himself at least ten times above every one of you, you made read below the cut. There are some blanks because the scan we have isn’t the greatest, but it doesn’t impede it much. No more than it impedes itself.

Contains Elementary Spoilers

Elementary, the newest player on the Sherlock Holmes market, premiered on CBS on September 27th. A modern take on Holmes starring Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu (as femme!Watson), many feared it was a cheap BBC knockoff. Not the case. The Babes take a good look at Elementary, how it relates to the canon and other adaptations. Baseball and the lack of exploding trees make appearances, as does an earnest message that new Holmes is always a good thing. Now about those shoes Joan…

bakerstreetbabes:

So SherlockNYC is hosting their own Sherlock Series 2 screening on November 17th, and we thought it’d be glorious to have one the same day by across the pond! With being in London, we do have the advantage of having some guests!

We have Michael Price, the composer for Sherlock and Joe Lidster, the man behind the Sherlock blogs confirmed to attend. We’re still sending out enquiries and waiting to hear back from others. We’ll update as we know more of course.

The preliminary schedule is to have doors open at 10AM with BELG starting at 11. Small break and then HOUND, lunch, then a Q&A with Sherlock Creatives, and then finally FALL, ending at 8PM.

The thing is… we need to prove to some people that there is enough interest to warrant them helping us financially to get this sorted! So what we need from you is to answer this poll HONESTLY. There are 285 seats at The Prince Charles Cinema (by Leicester Square), whom we’ve spoken with and plan to have the screening at.

So PLEASE vote in this poll [HERE], just so we have concrete numbers to show. Naturally you can reblog saying yes, etc, but please also vote!

Thank you!

——

So to some questions which will undoubtedly be asked!

Why £30? This is to pay for the cinema hire and the license fee to get the rights to show Sherlock. For a full day of Sherlock, Q&A, and some goodies, it’ll be worth it, we promise! The £40 VIP will be to further this and for decorations, supplies, and  gift bags for attendees. In addition by purchasing one of the VIP tickets, you’ll be in one of the first three rows and get first go at autographs, as a thank you.

Where is this? London! The Prince Charles Cinema is right in Leicester Square. Centrally located and everything. It’s a FANTASTIC venue. There’s a bar downstairs just outside of the cinema. The people there are fantastic and we can make it really special.

WILL BENEDICT BE THERE?!?!11/??! He’s filming. But we’ve asked all involved so hopefully we’ll get at least one of the cast members, though who we’ve got already is still epic!

So you’re doing a live podcast? Yes! The Q&A will be recorded and put online with our other episodes. Audience members will get to ask questions, huzzah!

Will it be filmed? Possibly. It’s something we can look into.

Have any other questions? Please ask. We want this to happen, but we need people to come!

Xx

bakerstreetbabes:

Delighted to say that Curly & Kafers were interviewed by NBC’s The Today Show today! Yes, THAT Today Show! (eee!) It’s for the Olympics and will air during The Games. It’s a cultural piece about Sherlock Holmes and England and the popularity, etc etc. The crew were delightful to work with and we had a good laugh (and lunch!) afterwards. We should have footage for you within three weeks!

Let me just say that ANYONE who can act with a camera has mad props. It’s really hard to ignore a giant machine next to your face. Got there after awhile, but it’s very distracting!

This was so much fun and it was such an honour to be asked. It’s not every day you wake up to an email from an NBC producer in your inbox. Eee, so yes, we’re going to be on your telly! (well, if you’re American that is.)

Please note there is a photo of Benedict on vacation going around that may have been questionably attained. It’s him in hand-gliding/wind surfing gear, not sure, but please do not reblog it if you see it. We’re not sure where it came from, but there have been rumors that it was obtained via a hacking. Thanks to cumberbuddy for the initial post on this. Private photographs of any celebrity should not be spread about tumblr or anywhere else on the internet. It’s only common courtesy. Thanks Xx

bakerstreetbabes:

We’re not trying to play fandom police, we’re just trying to spread the word as we’ve only just come across this.

I just found out less than an hour ago myself. FYI.

OK so the photos we found on instagram of Martin & Amanda’s children have been removed, but they may have spread, so please keep an eye out and report them the moment you see them.

bakerstreetbabes:

If people want to know what to write in the report, you can use this.

This is an unsolicited photograph of Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbington’s children. They have stated numerous times that they did not want the photograph circulated online and have asked for its removal.

Good info to have.
