A World Without Sherlock Holmes

mxpublishing:

As we are in Sherlock Holmes Week (raising awareness for the Save Undershaw campaign which is aiming to save Conan Doyle’s former home), we take time out to interview Alistair Duncan, one of the UK’s main Conan Doyle biographers, and fervent supporter of Save Undershaw. Can you imagine a world without Sherlock Holmes? Well, that could easily have happened. Conan Doyle killed him off and it wasn’t until he was at Undershaw did he resurrect Holmes.

Many people (including ourselves) have argued that with Undershaw there would be no Sherlock Holmes today, is it was here that Holmes went from merely mildy famous, to a worldwide phenomenon. We’re in no doubt that Undershaw is a key reason why Sherlock Holmes endures today - but we’re not experts, so lets see what Alistair thinks.

Alistair has written four main books so far on Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes; his last ‘An Entirely New Country’ specifically on the time Conan Doyle spent at Undershaw, with a share of royalties going to the ?Undershaw campaign.

When the BBC first launched BBC Sherlock, it was Alistair who was asked, as a leading Holmes expert, to review the first episode (A Study In Pink) and comment on it for BBC Radio Five Live before broadcast.

Who better then to comment on the campaign’s importance for Holmes fans?

Why were the years at Undershaw so important?

Undershaw is the house that was home to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle from 1897 to 1907. He helped to design it and under its roof many of his important works were produced. Notably, it was in this house that he resurrected Sherlock Holmes from his watery grave.

Some commentators claim that without Undershaw, there would be no Sherlock Holmes fandom today?

You could argue that, yes. It was, in part, the state of Conan Doyle’s finances during the building of Undershaw that led to him giving thought to writing a Sherlock Holmes play as a means of rescuing his bank balance. The play, which ultimately starred William Gillette, went on to great success around the world. It got people excited and reminded everyone just how staggeringly popular Holmes remained so many years after his ‘death’.

All of this excitement around Holmes may well have influenced Conan Doyle’s decision to include him in his famous story The Hound of the Baskervilles (which was not going to be a Holmes adventure to begin with).  The commercial success of this story, in turn, inspired American magazine editor Norman Hapgood to talk Conan Doyle into a proper resurrection of Sherlock Holmes, beginning with The Adventure of the Empty House in 1903.

So, the impact of Undershaw on Conan Doyle’s bank balance in 1897 could be said to have indirectly triggered the full-time resurrection of Sherlock Holmes in 1903.

What can readers expect to find in your book An Entirely New Country?

The book covers the building of Undershaw and Conan Doyle’s entire time there. Amongst other things, readers will discover how the Sherlock Holmes play came into being; how Conan Doyle went to South Africa to be a medic in the Boer War and how, upon his return, he wrote The Hound of the Baskervilles; how he finally gave into the demands to resurrect Holmes and stood twice for Parliament (unsuccessfully).

To sum up, the book provides a focus on a very eventful decade for one of Britain’s most famous writers during which he wrote some of his best work. A share of all the royalties from the book go to the Save Undershaw campaign - as indeed do all the royalties from this year’s compilation by BBC Sherlock fan site Sherlockology - Sherlock’s Home: The Empty House which Alistair was a key contributor to as well.

To support the campaign please visit the Save Undershaw Facebook Page and like it, and pick up a copy of both the books ‘An Entirely New Country’ and ‘Sherlock’s Home: The Empty House’.

Both books are available from all good bookstores including in the USA Barnes and Noble and Amazon, in the UK WaterstonesAmazon and Book Depository (free worldwide delivery) and in all electronic formats - KindleiPadKobo and Nook.

sherlockology:

Over the last few months leading up to the High Court Judicial Review, much has been said about Undershaw. We know of its neglected state and present precarious situation, as the house balances between being brought back to life in its original form, and ripped apart by developers, never to stand whole again. The alarming reality to see this house in the flesh however, as some of the Sherlockology team did recently, is far more shocking!

’Elementary’ Errors By Council See Campaigners Win Battle To Save Sherlock Creator’s Home

Undershaw Redevelopment Plans Quashed By High Court

30/05/2012

The man behind a three-year campaign to save the former Surrey home of Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is celebrating after winning a high-profile legal challenge to stop the redevelopment of the Grade II listed building.

A judgment handed down at the Royal Courts of Justice in London, following a judicial review brought by public law experts at Irwin Mitchell, states that Waverley Borough Council’s decision to grant planning permission to turn Undershaw into nine separate homes ‘must be quashed’ due to ‘legal flaws’ identified during the process.

The ruling brings an end to a global campaign to fight the redevelopment plans and preserve the history of the property, which was also designed and built by Conan Doyle.

After moving there in 1897, he wrote a number of Holmes stories, including the classic The Hound of the Baskervilles, while also entertaining numerous literary icons including Peter Pan author JM Barrie and Dracula creator Bram Stoker.

John Gibson, the Conan Doyle scholar who founded the Undershaw Preservation Trust in 2009 to oppose the redevelopment plans, gained support from Stephen Fry, Mark Gatiss, the co-creator of the BBC’s Sherlock and the area’s local MP and Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt during his tireless campaign against the permission granted to developer Fossway.

Reacting to the news, Mr Gibson said: “This has been a long and difficult battle to save Undershaw and we are absolutely thrilled with the decision to quash planning permission to redevelop the property. This is a place which is steeped in history and should be treated with reverence.

“Conan Doyle’s life and works are a fundamental part of British culture and arguably their stock has never been higher. We have been absolutely delighted to see enthusiasts from across the world get in touch and pledge their support to our efforts.

“We are very hopeful that this decision will signal a sea-change in attitude towards this historic property and  that it will lead to it being rightly preserved as a single building – hopefully as a museum or centre where future generations can be inspired by the many stories which have been created within its walls.”

Andrew Lockley, Head of Public Law at Irwin Mitchell who has represented Mr Gibson throughout his legal battle to save Undershaw, said: “We have had long-held concerns that basic errors were made by Waverley Borough Council in its decision to grant planning permission on Undershaw and this view has now been absolutely vindicated.

“The local authority failed to ensure that it received English Heritage’s views on the plans before taking its decision, despite consultation with EH being a legal requirement due to the property’s Grade II listed status.

“In addition, the council failed in its duty to reconsider the Fossway development plans following the submission of a second application on the property which would see it maintained as a single dwelling.

“Today’s decision means it is now back to the drawing board in terms of the future of Undershaw but, like John, we hope to see this property of huge cultural and historical significance preserved and treated in the manner it deserves.”
