A Road Less Traveled by verityburns
“Sherlock realises that John’s dating habits involve an unacceptable level of risk… what if he meets an unusually tolerant woman and ends up getting married?”

“Good afternoon, Mycroft,” Sherlock drawled, not bothering to tip his head back far enough to get the benefit of a no doubt snooty expression. “Has your ‘My brother is unacceptably happy’ alarm gone off again?”
Yeah, so the coda’s got around 4,000 words out of hand - shocker! - let’s just call it an extra chapter and be done with it. Publishing today, Monday 1st October…

”Sherlock realises that John’s dating habits involve an unacceptable level of risk… what if he meets an unusually tolerant woman and ends up getting married?”[x]
Sherlock scowled and turned away, moving as if to get up. John grabbed his arm.
“Sherlock, this is juvenile! It’s a teenage cliché - the whirlwind romance and everything is wonderful until peer pressure kicks in and you get cold feet.” He blanched, realising that he was thinking of ‘Grease’ and had just cast himself as Sandy.

Uhhh…*feels a bit like a twat because she has a somewhat similar question about this from back in April she hasn’t answered yet* OOPS. But that’s because this is a bit easier to answer than that one.
I like a variety of Sherlock and also Sherlock/John, Johnlock (yes, whatever it is called *laughs* whatever you prefer, I certainly don’t care). I’m not very picky as far as what I like “mood-wise” or writing style-wise, so there’s some variation. I tend to like fan fiction that’s either smutty (ha ha whoops) or just simply intriguing (most of the time plausible but not always). BUT I haven’t read too many fics because I have admitted several times that I am a very slow reader.
Right now I’m trying to broaden my berth of Sherlock fan fiction I’ve read, because so far it has all been mostly Sherlock/John and usually NC17. And I’ve realized they are usually relationship driven, no matter what the rating. Ha ha ha~
That being the case, I’ll give you a few links to fanfics I have actually finished reading lately and that I liked. :D
I would direct you to my Sherlock Fan Fiction tag, but so many of those reblogs I haven’t had time to read myself yet! *I know, bad me*

Punifa’s punk!strade and young!mycroft fan fiction (this is her fic tag)
Hints of Mystrade
I have been immensely enjoying Punifa’s short fanfics about Lestrade and Mycroft when they were teenagers; Lestrade a cheery punk kid and Mycroft an upperclass and somewhat nervous boy. These have been extremely cute.

Curious Case by Cleo2012
EXPLICIT, Sherlock/John
This is definitely a story I read for the smut (the writer says as much themselves “pwp with a hint of plot”). Honestly though, that hint of plot keeps this pwp interesting for me. I love a pwp every once in awhile, but the ones I remember and really like still have at least a hint of plot. (I guess I need context for it to work).
Basically the rundown of the story is that Sherlock burns his hands and is unable to “get off” as it were until his hands heal. He asks for John’s help on the matter. The concept is a bit…*even I don’t know what to think of it even now*-ish, but I admit to enjoying the story. :)

I feel like such a jerk, but I have yet to read more of Eva’s longer writings. So far I have been reading her short ficlet posts but I ABSOLUTELY ADORE THEM. A champion Mystrade writer. :D

The Whore of Babylon was a Perfectly Nice Girl by by out_there
EXPLICIT, Sherlock/John
This isn’t my usual fare, quite frankly. But, the concept intrigued me. I’m fairly sure this was written between series 1 and 2 and established a continuity of its own as to what Sherlock’s sexual history was (which is very different from what series 2 has now established). Even with that being the subject matter, the fic isn’t too terribly explicit, but still is a bit. I like how the fic more or less addresses that no matter a person’s sexual history, you need to be careful about not being judgmental.

A Heart in the Whole by verityburns
EXPLICIT, Sherlock/John
I pretty much always recommend verityburn’s work when asked for a fic rec. While it is rated as NC-17 eventually, it is also very sweet and endearing. This fic made me a fan of verityburn’s work, and I’m currently keeping up with her WIP, Given in Evidence.

These are just my latest reads. There are so many more I could recommend, OH GEEZ, but it would take me forever to answer. If you want something more specific, send me another ask (anon or not, I don’t bite! *laughs*) and I’ll give you a few more titles. Have fun!
“I don’t have to do anything.”
“But people will die!”
Sherlock yanked his arm away. “It’s what people DO!”

Oh, my. I was so sleepy last night, I couldn’t wait much longer for this to update. Darn! But, I’m reading it now~ XD
John reached out a hand and lightly stroked it over the side of Sherlock’s neck. “But you are breathtakingly gorgeous. How did I walk in on you in the shower just a few weeks ago and not think that?”
“Well, I was a bit scrawny.” Sherlock glanced down and John followed his gaze to where the concerted efforts of the people he lived with had managed to ‘feed him up’ a bit.
“You know that’s not what I mean.”
“I know.”
They looked at each other, unspoken words arching like a rainbow between them in the spray, then Sherlock shook his head like a dog, sending water in all directions and the moment was gone.

*silent squeak* Yay!
“He wasn’t limping.”
Presumably that meant more to him than it did to her. Mrs Hudson kept quiet.
“I was at the cemetery when you both visited, not too long after…” Sherlock shifted in his seat and looked down at his hands. “I needed to go abroad but I didn’t want to leave without seeing…”
She nodded at him encouragingly, not that he was looking. “Go on.”
He glanced at her, then away again. “It was obvious that he was upset. That you both were,” he amended. “But he didn’t have his cane. He wasn’t limping.” He shrugged. “It seemed that he would be all right.”
Mrs Hudson frowned. “I don’t really understand about the limping,” she admitted. “I remember he had a cane when he first came to look at the flat, but I’ve not seen it since. And then while you were gone… I kept thinking he must have been hurt, but he always said he was fine.” She thought back, remembering uneven footsteps on the stairs and catching him off guard every now and then. “But he still limped when he thought no one could see him.”
Looking forward to this…yes. XD
Wow. It’s just now Friday and already I can feel myself getting hyped up for verityburns’ next chapter of Given in Evidence. But it doesn’t update until Monday, so I still have the weekend to wait. But that’s more than cool~ *giggles*
Patience me…patience. I know I’m anticipating it because it was a longer wait this time for the newest chapter, but the wait is always worth it. <3
I’m enjoying reading it so much. Hee.
The Heart in the Whole by Verity Burns
Summary: Events after The Great Game leave Sherlock dependent on his best friend and colleague. But John has a secret of his own… Hurt/Comfort, Romance. Slash.
Paring: John/Sherlock
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: TBI
What we thought: In a word: fantastic. A multi chaptered long fic that has good enough pacing to pull you along the story throughout. It’s a joy to read, perfectly authentic, well developed, and sensitive. The relationship is treated incredibly in character and slow burning, developing with the care and respect that you’d expect from the two close flatmates who are both compromised by Sherlock’s new disability, and yet curious. It is beautifully romantic in both it’s platonic and sexual sides, and thus feels realistic in its development. There are subtle shorter plots running through the chapters that tie the characters very closely to the canon BBC Sherlock universe, and the minor characters are treated as well as the first. The fanfic takes no easy routes, developing each plot point - be it emotional or even action - with care and skill. Absorbing, beautifully written and a wonderful read. I can’t recommend it highly enough, for people who pair Sherlock and John and even those who don’t. One of our favourite fics of all time.
*one of my favorites*
“I’ve looked at that picture every day for the last two years and I’m taking it,” Sherlock declared.
“I’ve looked at it twice a day and it’s staying here,” John countered.
“I’m not leaving without it.”
“Fine. I never asked you to leave, anyway.”
“John…”
“You can’t have it. I paid for it. It’s mine.”
“It was my idea to pose for a portrait in the first place.”
“Still mine.”
Sherlock growled. “I want it.”
“Well, clearly we can’t always have what we want.”
“I’ll bring it back…”
“You won’t need to bring it back. You’re not taking it.”
There was a long silence.
“I don’t want to go.”
“Then stay.” John stepped forward.
“It’s just one…” Sherlock’s words were cut off and he was breathless by the time he was released.
“I don’t care,” John swore. “Bad luck? Tradition? Bring it on. I will not give up a single night with you.”
Sherlock glanced at the rings ready and waiting on the mantelpiece, next to the portrait they both loved. “Screw tradition?”
John laughed and pulled him closer. “It’s a good start…”
